Maestro system for copper line test and DSL pre-qualification

Maestro is an innovative system for testing qualification and monitoring of copper lines.

Maestro Test and Diagnostic Units (MTDU)

Knowledge and maintenance of the installed base copper plant are major concerns among operators. Maestro Test and Diagnostic Units (MTDU) address these specific needs by assuring line qualification for xDSL monitoring and maintenance of the copper pair access network.

The complete system is based on a modular architecture: It can be easily integrated with the management systems from the telecommunication network operator. The Maestro line test system can be used either for monitoring copper pair networks for telephone services (narrow band) or for services based on xDSL (broadband) technologies.

Maestro is ideal for qualifying lines handling POTS, ISDN, HDSL, HDSL-2, G.Lite, G.SHDSL and ADSL, VDSL services.

Using narrow band and wide band measurement including time domain reflectometry, Maestro enables operators to:

  • Carry out preventive maintenance of their networks and therefore anticipate any possibilities of failure by performing bulk testing, establishing line signatures and comparing results to predetermined templates (detection of deviations from reference values).
  • Perform corrective maintenance of the network by identifying wiring errors and any failures that may affect the service provided to clients, obtaining a clear diagnostic, accurately localizing the failure.
  • Calculate the maximum xDSL bit rate of the line, and therefore automatically qualify the line from single ended tests made at the local exchange.
  • Decrease considerably the number of operations by technicians, thus cutting costs.
  • Guarantee the operator’s quality image, thus increasing customer satisfaction and brand loyalty.

  • Resistances: A/B A/G B/G
  • Capacitances: A/B A/G B/G EFF.

Wide band measurement (WB)

  • Echometric localization (TDR)
  • Longitudinal balance loss
  • Noise in xDSL Band
  • Loss at 150kHz, 300kHz, 1Mhz
  • Bit rate prediction for DSL

These measurements are done at various frequencies to be independent of the line elements and the CPE installation. The diagnostics and localization of fault made from physical measurements are based on both narrow band and wide band measurements.
